A Visit to the Police Academy and Day of Learning, Training, and Connection in Tokyo
After our morning routine, Pedro and I were invited to visit the Tokyo Police Department for a special tour. We were hosted by Special Agent Sorci, who is not only a defensive tactics instructor at the academy but also a black belt under Sensei Takamasa Watanabe. It was a real privilege to meet someone with such deep knowledge and expertise. What made the visit even more special was when Special Agent Sorci invited Pedro to teach a Valente Brothers seminar at the historic Tokyo Police dojo. Seeing the respect for jujutsu and the Valente Brothers' teachings in a place as prestigious as the Tokyo Police dojo was a humbling moment.
After our time at the academy, we returned briefly to the hotel before heading to Axis Jiu-Jitsu Academy. There, I had the opportunity to receive a private lesson from Pedro, with Sensei Watanabe and Special Agent Sorci observing. It was an intense but rewarding session, and having the guidance of Pedro in such a setting was truly an honor. After my lesson, Pedro conducted a special training session for both Sensei Watanabe and Special Agent Sorci. The focus was on reviewing the self-defense curriculum, but the real magic happened in the exchange of ideas. The strength and skill that Special Agent Sorci brought to the table gave Pedro a chance to work through defensive techniques against a fully resisting opponent, which made the training all the more valuable.
The hospitality we experienced from both Sensei Watanabe and Special Agent Sorci over the last few days has been extraordinary. Their openness and generosity made us feel so welcome, and Pedro and I are deeply grateful for the time we’ve spent with them. It’s amazing how martial arts can bring people together, no matter where we’re from.
To close out the day, we headed to Roppongi for another teppanyaki dinner. There’s something special about sitting around a grill, sharing stories, and reflecting on the experiences of the day over an incredible meal. It’s the perfect way to wind down after a day full of activity, and tonight was no different. We shared laughter and great conversations, grateful for the bonds we’re forming.
As the evening came to a close, we returned to the hotel to pack for our journey to Kyoto by train tomorrow morning. It’s been an unforgettable time here in Tokyo, and I’m looking forward to what the next chapter of this journey holds.
